Janis Johnson

Janis has always enjoyed making things. When she was young her grandmother taught her to knit and sew. In high school she learned to use a potter’s wheel, and later learned a bit about quilting, woodworking, crochet, macrame, paper-making, block printing, weaving on a rigid heddle loom, dyeing, felting, and using a spinning wheel to make hand-spun yarn. She worried that she was just a dilettante in the art world, but decided that her hobby was learning to make things and so dabbling was just fine,

In 2010 Janis started learning to weave on a floor loom at Ruthie’s Weaving Studio in Portland and soon realized that she had found an area that could keep her busy following her curiosity for years to come. She is active in the Portland Handweavers Guild and has taken many workshops through PHG and regional fiber festivals and weaving conferences, plus a three-week class in Italy weaving on a 100-year-old manual Jacquard loom.

In addition to selling handwoven household textiles at Rain Spark Gallery, Janis sells a variety of handwoven and handspun items at Portland Handweavers Guild sales and on consignment at Fiber Rhythm in Portland.
